Aniston and Eckhart talk "Love Happens"

Understated comedy, chaste movie romances and Cary Grant:

Sick Lisa Ray Works the Red Carpet in Toronto

Lisa RayDespite being diagnosed with a rare type of cancer a while ago, Bollywood beauty Lisa Ray braved her illness and walked the Toronto International Film Festival red carpet today at the premiere of her new movie, "Cooking With Stella."

Film director and friend Deepa Mehta, whose brother Dilip Mehta directed "Cooking With Stella," expressed her high esteem for the former Miss India-Canada title-holder, who keeps living her life in spite of all her troubles:

"We’re looking at a woman who is a portrait of courage. She will do the red carpet proud. I remember when Lisa was shooting for "Cooking With Stella." She was having so much fun with all of us. There was no sign of the illness. The only outward manifestation of the crisis to come was her loss of appetite. I remember telling her on the sets, ‘Lisa, you aren’t eating anything.’ She’s going to defeat this crisis. Lisa is a fighter."

Lisa recently blogged about her illness and said she was determined to survive: "I believe it can be cured. That’s the Dirty Realist in me."

Well done Lisa Ray for braving the disease and showing up at the premiere of "Cooking With Stella."

Biti Reps the Women on the Bhangra Scene

There's no denying that the Bhangra circuit is male dominated. Yes we all enjoy listening to strong male vocals, but where are the sweet, emotional and fun-loving women on the scene? This was a big summer for Miss Pooja as she updated her style and released her solo album "Romantic Jatt." And now it looks like Bhangra singer Biti wants to follow in her footsteps and put out some music of her own!

Though you may not recognize her name, Biti has worked with a number of producers before and her vocals have taken tracks to the top of the charts! One of Biti's first songs was "Shad Haya Channa," which was also accompanied by a video. Later Biti was approached by the producer team of Jinx and they asked her to do the track "Gal Sun." "Gal Sun" was dubbed "The Song of 2006" by a local U.K. radio station. Jinx enjoyed working with Biti and called her back to do a song for their second album, "Jus Jinx." We can hear Biti's voice on the romantic number "Tera Mera Pyar." Her voice is very soft, sweet, and a delight to listen to. In fact her song "Aaj Nachna Veh," produced by Jags Klimax, has been played a number of times on the U.K. soap opera "EastEnders."

So what's next for this budding star? Biti is working on a collaboration with Sabrina on the song "Vey Vanjaariya," which is set for release on October 20 on iTunes. "Vey Vanjaariya" is not a loud dance song, but showcases both Biti and Sabrina's vocals well. The two female singers hit all their notes and relay all the right emotions.

Check out this teaser for "Vey Vanjaariya" and tell us what you think. Do you think Biti has what it takes to break into the male dominated Bhangra scene?

Defending Jen

Five of Jennifer Aniston's best

Jennifer Aniston gets a bad rap. From the endless tabloid stories she must endure as the "jilted woman" (need I remind readers who her very famous ex-husband hooked up with?), a perception that spills into even, quite unfairly, critical assessment of her work, the talented actress seems in a perpetual state of maintaining. But that's through gossip. And though I loathe beginning this piece addressing such matters, it's hard to ignore. Aniston onlookers may have a tough time separating her real-life drama from her on-screen image--and she doesn't deserve it.

She made her massive splash as Rachel Green in the tremendously popular sitcom "Friends." Men, women, children, and probably even animals all fell in love with her girl-next-door loveliness and her quickly imitated hairstyle. She was the ultimate girlfriend: sexy, funny, down to earth, and sweet. And she was very funny, possessing a comic timing and delivery that is, dare I say, Aniston-esque. It's no wonder those comic geniuses at "South Park" (Matt Stone and Trey Parker) cast her vocal talent as the kids' teacher during the hysterical rainforest episode. Who would mistake that voice, those nicely timed inflections?

With the release of her newest movie, "Love Happens," in which she plays a free-spirited, funky Seattle florist to Aaron Eckhart's suffering self-help guru, Aniston continues her on-screen appeal. No, she hasn't made her "Casablanca" quite yet (unless you count "Marley & Me" which, sorry, is quite charming). But she has appeared in, among other pictures: an underrated anti-romantic comedy; a poignantly funny, dark indie drama; a bona fide cult classic; and a movie opposite a leprechaun. And she did so with talent, charm and emotion. And sometimes with fantastic hair. But that's hard for her to avoid. With that, here are five of my favorite Aniston performances. Argue, dissect or agree. But please (as much as I love her ex's paramour) refrain from any Team Jolie business.

Here's my first Jen Best:

"The Good Girl" (2002)

Aniston's performance as an unfulfilled, sad, small-town retail clerk is one of her finest, and is not discussed enough. Actresses (and pretty actresses in particular) are often heralded for their bravery when they go "ugly" (like Charlize Theron in "Monster"), but I think it's much more fearless for a woman to go plain. Watching Theron pack on the pounds, place in the false teeth and sport scraggly hair, we know that underneath all that lies a knockout, a fashion model. But what if your posture looks bad, your hair is unexceptional, your clothes, makeup and general disposition are all passably pretty but just a little dumpy? A real woman sans stylists, makeup artists and punishing diet plans -- that's Jen's Justine. Working at one of those low-rent, catch-all stores called Retail Rodeo (the kind of store that seems charming in these days of Walmart-ization), she's the prettiest girl on the floor (if we don't count Zooey Deschanel, whose quirky gorgeousness is too weird for the mainstream outlet). Justine is married to a less-than-ambitious husband (a touching John C. Reilly), and seeks more from her humdrum existence. She finds an out in a new employee, lost soul Holden Worther (Jake Gyllenhaal), a 22-year-old who's obsessed with "The Catcher in the Rye" and, quickly, with Justine. Since both are searching for something, any kind of inspiration or magic in life, their affair naturally becomes intense, and sees a wonderful escape at first, but spirals into dysfunction. Aniston loses all of her "Friends" tricks: no quick jokes, no sunny affirmations, no rocking jeans and tank top combinations. She plays a very nuanced, understated character, a person we all can recognize in people we know, and perhaps in ourselves.

Kareena Kapoor Stuck in the Mountains on her Birthday

Kareena KapoorPoor Kareena Kapoor! The Bollywood beauty has to work on her birthday! Her boyfriend Saif Ali Khan had planned to throw her a big b-day bash in Mumbai on September 21, but had to cancel the party after receiving the bad news.

Kareena is currently shooting Rajkumar Hirani’s new movie "3 Idiots" with Aamir Khan and Boman Irani in the Himalayas, so at least she won’t be alone on her big day, although she will be stuck in the mountains!

Well the "Main Aur Mrs Khanna" star sure takes her acting career seriously, maybe too seriously?

What do you think? Should Kareena Kapoor fly back to Mumbai and party like a rockstar for her birthday or is work more important? Drop us a line!

Tigerstyle Ready to Release Gunjan's Debut Album

Gunjan in a pink halter top. With her delicate features and traditional sound, Hindi vocalist Gunjan got her shot at fame while on tour with Sonu Niigaam. The singer has been fortunate enough to gain exposure while featuring alongside other artists, but she hasn't had a chance to be in the spotlight yet. Well now is her chance as Glaswegian producers Tigerstyle are getting ready to release Gunjan's first album ever!

Other well-known producers like Johnny Kalsi, Bandish Project, Bombay Dub orchestra, Blitz and Roach Killa have also worked on the album. And with a line-up like that the album is off to a good start.
A source tells us that there is going to be another duet between Gunjan and Bhangra artist Bikram Singh, and we hear it's much better than the tracks, "Kawan" or "Ik Vaari!"

A video shoot is set to take place very soon and the album should drop at the end of the year. Are you eager to get your hands on Gunjan's debut album? Drop us a line!

Patrick Swayze: 1952-2009

Goodbye Patrick Swayze

How many young girls (and older women, and many men as well) swooned when that hunky yet sensitive, uber masculine yet beautifully graceful Patrick Swayze stood up for the awkward, nerdy Jennifer Grey in the admittedly cheesy but now classic "Dirty Dancing"? Legions. Legions. I remember sitting on the school bus in 1987, wondering what these girls were yammering on and on this 1960s-era story of the mismatched but eventual love between a Catskills dance instructor/bad boy and a sweet, smart but insecure vacationing teenager. When I saw the movie (a huge, sleeper hit; the "Grease" of the 1980s), I thought, wow, kind of cornpone, but there is something here. There was a definite "it" quality to the picture that spiked right into the world's romantic fantasy jugular. And, for me, that "it" was Swayze. He was the movie. Now, 22 years later, the star has died after a nearly two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

His dancing was not only erotic swagger; he brought the heart and soul and heat and sexuality and even a wounded vulnerability to his part (and the music, particularly the Otis Redding, helped). Much like John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever," this was a man (not a little boy, but a man) dancing with such impressive athleticism and grace that, no matter what you may have thought of the movie itself, you could not take your eyes off of him.
"Nobody puts Baby in the corner."

Born in 1952 in Houston, this rough-around-the-edges "Road House" toughie was actually (and perhaps, not surprisingly) the son of a choreographer/dancer mother, who influenced young Swayze toward dance. Rounding out his abilities nicely, he took up ice skating, classical ballet, gymnastics and acting. But it's the dancing that stuck, so, in 1972, he completed his formal dance training in New York at the Harkness and Joffrey ballet schools.

And yet the dancing wasn't originally what gave him notice in Hollywood. It was the movie in which I first saw him: Francis Ford Coppola's lovingly made "The Outsiders," in which he played Darrel, the older, greaser brother and concerned surrogate parent for his troubled Tulsan siblings Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell) and Sodapop (Rob Lowe). He had a rugged, likable yet stern quality that carried over into works like "Red Dawn," "Youngblood" and the Civil War TV miniseries "North and South," a critical and commercial success for Swayze. This somewhat odd looking yet severely handsome man who could rumble, carry heavy artillery and fight among the blue had arrived. He was well on his way to becoming a huge star. Who even knew this guy was a dancer? By 1987, everyone.

But most Hollywood careers have their ups and downs, and, for a short time, Swayze landed a few duds. He did make "Road House," the story of Swayze's bar "cooler" taking on drunks, a hot blonde and a town run by a ridiculously neofascist Ben Gazzara that has since (and deservedly) become a cult classic.
I can't repeat a line said in the movie here (to Swayze, something about what a guy did to guys like him in prison), but among "Road House" fanatics, it's just as famous that "Baby in the corner" stuff. Or that other line (and this is when Swayze had his tremendous second wind): "Ditto," uttered famously in the award-winning, massively successful "Ghost" (1990), co-starring a teary-eyed Demi Moore, and a sassy Whoopi Goldberg (who won an Oscar for her role).

Lest you have forgotten (and I can't believe you have), Swayze is the ghost of the title, the better half of Moore's sculptress, whose life is ripped apart and placed in peril after Swayze dies in a botched robbery attempt. He is trapped between two worlds, and his desperate desire to not only save his girlfriend from the bad guys who killed him, but also to communicate that he does indeed love her, makes for the picture's romantic dilemma -- he always said, "Ditto," and not, "I love you," when Moore told him how she felt (insert big sigh here). He finally does see her (thanks to Goldberg's Oda Mae), and after finally saying, "I love you," dewy Demi says, "Ditto." That moment became one of those touchstone sequences in which half the moviegoers lost their collective cool and bawled their eyes out.

But again, though the movie was nominated for Best Picture, Goldberg won Best Supporting Actress, and Demi's pixie haircut became as famous as "the Farrah" or "the Rachel," it was Swayze who provided the emotional weight of the picture. He carries the universal understanding of sadness, love and regret -- the regret of not saying those things we should have said to loved ones. And then that short-lived hope (and fantasy) for one more moment with them.

Hot after "Ghost," Swayze starred in the undeniably entertaining "Point Break," another huge hit, opposite Keanu Reeves, and by 1991 was anointed by People Magazine as "The Sexiest Man Alive." And that was his peak. Swayze never had another hit that big, instead suffering from a riding accident in which he fell from a horse and broke both of his legs -- not good for an actor, an especially a dancer.

His career was on hold for a while, but Swayze took on some interesting roles later, notably as a motivational speaker/secret pedophile in 2000's "Donnie Darko." A joke at first, then a monster, his character becomes oddly heartbreaking, particularly in a beautifully filmed sequence set to Gary Jules' cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World." His face, perhaps his relationship to dance -- whatever it was, Swayze had a unique way of making songs (from "Love Man" to "Unchained Melody") incredibly memorable on-screen. He may have become typecast as a kind of cheesy relic of the 1980s, but, really, he was so much more than that. Though he had a great career, it could have been greater, had he been allowed to stretch, been allowed to express or dance more stories.

Ah, I’ll state the obvious here, but it’s damn sad. Quite simply, I liked him. And I’d love for him to come back, if only for one moment, and even just to say that one corny line: “Ditto.” Or better yet and without one trace of irony, “Left boot.”
