Akon Informs People of Human Trafficking Via Website
March 30 2009 17:55 PST
Akon is well known for his catchy hooks and massive hits, but always takes time out to be charitable and support causes he believes in. Well this one is about a problem that affects the world that goes under the radar. Akon is teaming up with Peter Buffett, the son of billionaire businessman and philanthropist Warren Buffett, to spread the word and even more important, the awareness of what is now the fastest growing criminal industry in the world.
Akon and Buffet created a website called IsThereSomethingICanDo.com focusing on human trafficking. Akon said, "What this site is, it gives anyone information related to foundations. Some people are like, 'I want to help somebody' or they want to donate money to a foundation, but don't have the means to find out how to do so - this site is almost like a Google for that. Anybody that wants to do anything philanthropic can go to this site and get more information on it. What we do every quarter is focus on a topic - this quarter is human trafficking. It's something that's been happening around the world. That's the focus, and we're launching a song we did called 'Blood Into Gold.'
Akon is referring to a song he recorded to continue to get the word out. He performed this song at the United Nations last Wednesday so the song should be circulating online if you want to listen to it yourself.
While Akon was born in St. Louis, Missouri, he was raised in Dakar, Senegal, a country in West Africa that is heavily affected by human trafficking. He has been outspoken on the environment he grew up in as well as the issues surrounding Africa. For those that aren't sure what human trafficking is, it is the exploitation of people, sometimes even small children, for financial gain, basically modern day slavery. This is a worldwide problem, from countries like the US and France to poorer countries such as Iran and Sudan. In India, 20-60 million people are modern day slaves, working to pay off generations anf generations of debt. 300,000 of these workers are children and 800,000 people are sent to other countries forced into prostitution, sweatshops, domestic labor, farming and child armies. Human trafficking in India has been standard practice for nearly 2000 years.
"You can raise the awareness of it," Akon said. "[There's] a lot of that going on around the world, people being sold - even here, pimping is human trafficking, if you look at it. You got these women in brothels and whorehouses against their wills. A lot of people don't know what to do or where to start, let alone how to stop it. We're just trying to find a solution. Our involvement is not profitable; it's just to raise awareness. The more people who know about it, the solutions are eventually gonna come. That's how you start - people who aren't aware, make them aware."
This is absolutely a site you have to check out if this is a subject that interests you. You can make just as much of a difference regarding this topic as Akon can by checking out the site and doing whatever you can to help. Tell us what you guys think of human trafficking and what you think of Akon and Peter Buffett's efforts to slowly but surely call attention to stopping human trafficking.
Ajay Devgan, Mugdha Godse, and Fardeen Khan Flag off 'Lavasa Women's Drive Rally'
March 30 2009 19:25 PST
Lavasa Corporation Ltd. had a bright sunny day for their rally 'Lavasa Women's Drive' on Sunday. The company's hope was to raise awareness for the cause of women's cancer. Any funds that were raised were donated to the Women's Cancer Initiative of Tata Memorial Hospital.
A few stars came out to show their support and flag off the rally. Originally it was said that Bipasha Basu was supposed to be one of the celebrities. However, the day of the rally found Ajay Devgan, Mugdha Godse, Fardeen Khan taking the reins. Some other appearances included Gul Panag, Diana Hayden, Pooja Bedi, VJ Sophie Choudary, socialite Devika Bhojwani and fashion designer Shaina NC.
As the cars came across the finish line at the 'Lavasa Women's Drive', they were welcomed by special foot and head massage offered to all women participants in the rally, exclusive food stalls, bangle and bead makers and cut outs for exclusive photo opportunities. While all of the celebrations went on; a live DJ provided entertainment through games and music. There was even a lunch organized at the newly opened four star ITC hotel at Lavasa called the Fortune Select Dasve.
The Senior Vice President of Marketing for Lavasa Corporation Limited, Anuradha Paraskar said of the event "We are proud to host the Lavasa Women's Drive which saw hordes of women participants get behind wheels for a cause. The woman of today is smart, intelligent and ever willing to take on new challenges in life. A car rally to the beautiful hill city of Lavasa amply brings out this spirit of the modern woman. We salute this spirit which also brought out the softer side of the woman that supported the cause of creating awareness about the need of early detection of cancer."
We want you to check out the pictures of all the fun that went on for this important cause. It was truly a successful day. Let us know your thoughts and opinions.
Katrina Kaif Visits Dharavi Slums
March 30 2009 20:30 PST
Katrina Kaif may be the new face of 'Bollywood Barbie', but on Sunday she took off her Barbie dress to help out those less fortunate at Nature's Park in Dharavi, Mumbai. The beautiful Bollywood actress and model put on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt and quickly got personal with the kids of Dharavi Mumbai. The children who are used to living in dirty slums were all smiles as they got to hang out with the sexy star and even got her autograph.
The visit was sponsored by the 'Being Human' institute which Salman Khan founded under his organization called the 'Salman Khan Foundation'. The purpose of this organization (which is a pre- 'Slumdog Millionaire' effort) is to help underprivileged kids. That's why it's no surprise that Katrina Kaif was wearing a bright blue T-shirt that had the title 'Being Human' across the chest; in support of her beau's institute and cause.
Things with Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif may not always be on the best terms, but it's nice to see that this didn't affect her desire to help the less fortunate. It was pretty cool to see Katrina Kaif smiling brightly as she hung out with the kids who looked up to her. It was also nice to see the more down to earth, benevolent side of Katrina Kaif that was brought out by the children.
So we have some pictures from the event that brought the kids together for a day of fun in the park with Katrina Kaif. We want to know what you think about Katrina Kaif getting involved in this way. Check out the pictures and let us know what you think of the Bollywood babe Katrina Kaif.
Shilpa Shetty to Join the Cast of the Show 'EastEnders'
March 30 2009 18:45 PST
Shilpa Shetty seems to be the Indian sweetheart that everyone's after! We can't deny that she's done it all from modeling, acting, and lending her support to causes like PETA and the HIV/AIDS movement. She's worked on countless movies in the Bollywood, Kannada, and Tamil industries and has been nominated and won many awards. Well now, the woman who was focusing more on her Bollywood career; has the UK knocking on her door.
The 33-year-old former 'Big Brother' star recently moved into a £5 million luxury home in Surrey, U.K. with her boyfriend Raj Kundra and she's not wasting any time trying to make a name for herself in the Britain. That tenacity just might land her a spot on the popular soap 'EastEnders'. That's right; Shilpa Shetty may soon be ditching her Bollywood dreams to play a character on a British soap opera. We can hardly believe it, but it may be happening very soon.
Someone close to Shilpa Shetty said recently of the possibility that this would "Springboard to long-term success in Britain. Primetime exposure several times a week on mainstream English TV will do her career the world of good. All sorts of roles and deals could follow." The talks are happening right now and if chosen, Shilpa Shetty would play a member of a new Indian family in Albert Square.
The show is popular in Britain and since there's a large number of Desi people in the U.K.; this could be just the right exposure for Shilpa Shetty to make her career soar. So what do our readers think about Shilpa Shetty possibly joining the cast of the 'EastEnders'? Do you think that this would be a good career move for Shilpa Shetty or do you think she needs to stick to Bollywood? Give us your thoughts on this career change.
'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na' Part 2?
March 29 2009 21:10 PST
Seems like sequels are the latest flavor in Bollywood, with films like, 'Dostana,' 'Don,' 'Dhoom,' and 'Hera Pheri' and now one of 2008's biggest films is getting a second chance! Seems like all signals are a go with a sequel to the Imran Khan - Genelia D'Souza starrer, 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na'! Director Abbas Tyrewala is writing an outline for the sequel's story.
Since the first part left of with Jai (played by Imran Khan) and Aditi (played by Genelia D'Souza) returning from the airport, the sequel will focus on the troubles in their married life. Word is Jai will get drunk one night and have a one night stand with another woman and needless to say they're soon on the verge of divorce.
Imran Khan and Genelia D'Souza will of course return to play their respective roles and we hear the actors who played their friends will also be taking part in the sequel. But alas the project will not start right away as Abbas is busy with his next project '1-800-Love' starring his wife Pakhi and John Abraham. The title of the sequel has also not been finalized yet.
Hmm... Jai cheating on Aditi after they're married? We're not too sure about that! What do you guys think about a grown up sequel to a film that was such a college-going, young and breezy film? Would you want to watch Jai and Aditi's trails and tribulations in married life, or would you rather remember them as the happy young couple returning from their honeymoon? Drop us a comment with your thoughts!
Lakme Fashion Week Starts Off With a Bang
March 29 2009 20:15 PST
Nishka Lulla wasn't the only one who was starting Lakme Fashion Week off with a bang. Two of the biggest designers in India; Manish Malhotra and Sabyasachi Mukherjee left a lasting impression on the other designers and attendees. It's safe to say that the first day of Lakme Fashion Week was one that was not to be missed.
Lakme Fashion Week is the premiere event in India for what's hot in fashion. The show which takes place twice a year to show off the coolest new designs for all four seasons is under way and has set the bar high for the world of fashion with innovative design that doesn't compromise wearability. The show started Friday and will continue until Tuesday; saying good-bye to March in style.
Designers who showed off some sexy and creative designs included Vikram Phadnis, Wendell Rodricks, Vivek Kumar, Atit Bhatt, Anand Bhushan, Tanvi Kedia, Abdul Haldar, Ruchi Mehta, Niak, Jyoti Sharma, and Archana Kochar. And of course there was Manish Malhotra who drew some of Bollywood's finest including Deepika Padukone, Asin, and Anushka Sharma. They just couldn't wait to get a taste of what the designer had up his sleeve for this year.
Manish Malhotra was even kind enough to comment on his clothes, saying that "My collections are all about luxury. They're very pretty, feminine, feel good...colors for men--they are more textured...So I mean if you saw the clothes...there was no jewelry. The whole take to it was a bit more modern." Deepika Padukone who appears to be a big fan had a lot to say about the fashion forward designer as well. She said with a smile "Manish, I mean again I think he's a wonderful person and I think that's what has made him so successful--the fact that he makes good clothes. And he has always been there for...for me at least".
We wonder what surprises will be ahead in the days to come during the rest of Lakme Fashion Week. But we want our readers to check out some of the pictures from the event since you couldn't be there in person. We want you to tell us what you think of the designs for this year and if you think that they're nice and stylish. Give us your thought on the event's for the first day of Lakme Fashion Week.
Katrina Kaif replaces Aishwarya Rai in the "Barbie All Doll'd Up" Show at Lakme Fashion Week
March 29 2009 17:25 PST
It's that time of year again when everyone is thinking about summer; meanwhile designers are already planning fall and winter clothing lines. Lakme and IMG Fashion have been coming together twice a year for Lakme Fashion Week. The week long event is said to take place to redefine the future of fashion and Integrate India into the global fashion world. Well Lakme Fashion Week wanted to show that they have a fun side that remembers fashion started for many women when they were young girls. That's why they wanted to hold an event that was both cutting edge and reminiscent of one of the most iconic dolls of childhood.
Yes, that's right-after 50 years, people still can't help but get caught up in Barbie fever. We have already told you that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was going to be the face of 'Bollywood Barbie'; but refused. Well Lakme Fashion Week opened their festivities for Fall/Winter 2009 anyway and threw a rocking event called Barbie All Doll'd Up to celebrate the doll that is known around the world.
This "Dress the Barbie" event drew about 75 entries from top designers all over the country. Out of that number; 20 "dolls" walked down the runway>The designs were playful, colorful, and whimsical. Outfits by designers Vivek Kumar, Neeta Lulla, Atit Bhatt, Anand Bhushan, Tanvi Kedia, Abdul Haldar, Ruchi Mehta, Niak, Jyoti Sharma, Sonam Mehta, Prashant/Sudha and Shantanu/Nikhil were displayed. The event took place at the Ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Mumbai on Friday March 27th. The runway was Barbie chic with the color pink everywhere along with the well recognized Barbie logo.
The winning dress was by Nishka Lulla which was modeled by the super sexy actress Katrina Kaif. It looks like since Aishwaraya Rai Bachchan doesn't want to be immortalized in plastic doll form that Katrina Kaif is going to take her place. A spokesperson for Mattel India said "There are plans to replicate the winning design on the doll within six months or so. It will definitely be this year and the doll will be a Katrina Kaif look-alike".
Nishka Lulla said of her winning dress "I dressed up Barbie in what would be her 18th birthday outfit. I've made use of a big golden bow at the back, and brocades and the Rajasthani Shibori fabric. I wanted to create something cute and vibrant for 'My Barbie', something that would showcase her spirit...Bright colors are going to stay, there may be sober hues like white, black, grey showing up in the backdrop of the recession."
So we want to know what you think of how Lakme Fashion Week was kicked off and what you think about all this Barbie mania. What do you think about Katrina Kaif being chosen as Barbie in place of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan? Give us your thoughts on the event and how you like the styles that were introduced. Check out the pictures of the designs; particularly the one of Katrina Kaif as Miss Barbie. We can't wait to read your thoughts on Lakme Fashion Week's kickoff event and the clothing.
