Last night's American Idol finale was definitely full of surprises, the biggest one being the announcement that Kris Allen is the new American Idol. In one word the two hour plus performance was bizarre. Pop stars from the past reenacted their glory days, while the 13 top contestants proved once again they cannot dance. In case you missed the show I will take you through some of the highlights.
The star studded performance included many interesting performances. To name a few: Steve Martin strumming on a banjo while Megan Joy and Michael Sarver attempted to croon a country ballad (I say "attempted" because I'm not really sure what it was they were doing. But, props to Steve martin for his exceptional banjo playing ability). Cyndi Lauper and Allison Iraheta gave a great vocal performance, but left the audience wondering, was Ms. Lauper sober? Why was she sitting with her legs wide open? And what instrument was she playing? Danny Gokey gave a stellar performance with Lionel Richie, but, the performance of the night goes to Adam Lambert with KISS. Not only did Adam sound great but he fit right in with the makeup, boots, and outlandish costume (I think the band has found their new lead singer!) As if the performances weren't crazy enough, the winner announcement pushed the show's surprises over the edge.
After weeks of assuming Adam would take it all, Kris Allen received the trophy (yes, there was an actual trophy!!) One has to wonder, what was America thinking?! It is quite obvious that Adam is the better performer and better vocalist, not to mention a much more interesting persona. It also seems that Adam is more popular, at least according to the song sales on itunes. So what happened? Was America reluctant to crown such a flamboyant personality? Or did they not listen to the performances, and voted Kris Allen on the merits of his cute blonde wife?
