John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy’s brother, Edward Kennedy, passed away last night at the age of 77 in his home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. He was diagnosed with brain cancer in May 2008.
Ted Kennedy graduated from Harvard University and Virginia School of Law before running for Democratic Senator in 1962. He was re-elected in 1964, 1970, 1976, 1982, 1988, 1994 and 2000.
He also ran for president in 1980 but lost in the primaries to Jimmy Carter.
Topics close to his heart include health care, the environment and education.
His sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver died August 11 at the age of 88.
His family released a statement praising the work of the "The Lion of the Senate":
"We've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever ... He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it."
President Obama released a statement expressing his grief over the loss of a colleague and a friend:
"I valued his wise counsel in the Senate, where, regardless of the swirl of events, he always had time for a new colleague. I cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the Presidency. And even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness, I've profited as President from his encouragement and wisdom."
