New York – One of the perks of being a designer is that if there's an article of clothing that you want but can't find, you can always design it yourself.

Going for Seconds: Rad by Rad Hourani Debuts

Such was the case with Rad Hourani in his que st for his version of the perfect everyday t-shirt, pair of pants, cardigan or jacket.

"I needed these pieces in my wardrobe, but I couldn't find the right shape," said Hourani at the presentation for his new secondary line, Rad by Rad Hourani, in New York on Tuesday, July 28. "They're very urban. It's casual with a touch of chicness."

The diffusion line, which consists of seasonless pieces in the spirit of his eponymous collection, launches in November at a more affordable price point, ranging from $100 to $400.

Hourani, who launched his eponymous label in 2007, favors a sharp, brooding aesthetic, not unlike Gareth Pugh or Rick Owens, with signatures that include second-skin leather pants with horizontal zips, draped asymmetrical jackets (like a minimalist motorcycle jacket, lacking hardware or stiffness), squarish cuts and lots of layered tops over skinny legs.

It's a look that's perfectly suited to the waifish, androgynous types who populated both the runway and the audience at the Soho Grand Hotel, where Hourani showed his 15 new looks.

Hourani kept the same silhouettes, but swapped luxe fabrics like cashmere and leather for lighter fabrics like coated cotton, rayon, jersey and silk with small amounts of stretch. As with all his collections, everything is unisex and multifunctional. A cardigan could be worn a few different ways, or a dress might also function as a top. And breaking from his usual dark color palette, Hourani added some color, like a fire engine red and rich midnight blue.

Hourani said he'd been planning to do a second line since the inception of his first label, but with a growing sales team, the timing was right for it now. "Everyone is asking, why do this now, during the recession?" he said. "But our sales have been doubling."

The collection will be available online at RadByRadHourani.com starting in November, and in stores come December.
