PETA Has Given Up On Hollywood And Moved On To Bollywood!

By Aryanna Garber

The Oscars went Bollywood, the Pussycat Dolls went Bollywood, and now PETA, you guessed it, has gone Bollywood too. The animal welfare organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), has been urging members of the Indian International Film Academy (IIFA) to avoid meat at their June event in Macau, China.

Since the event declared their “Go Green” theme, PETA has swooped in on the opportunity to promote their environmentally friendly agenda. Anuradha Sawhney, the Chief Functionary of PETA, reportedly sent letters to the IIFA asking for their support, and the support of their ambassador, Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh is an outspoken vegetarian and has been a long time supporter of PETA India, therefore, he seems to be the perfect man to champion this campaign. PETA, may also gain support from the many vegetarians in India, who may influence the IIFA’s decision.

Over the last decade, PETA has gained a strong support network in Hollywood. They have gotten many celebrities to pose nude for their “No Fur” campaigns, as well as, numerous other celeb advertisements. Some of their big celebrity advocates include American actors, Alicia Silverstone, Eva Mendes, Christina Applegate, and Dennis Rodman. I guess it was just a matter of time before PETA decided to infiltrate Bollywood.

Perhaps, the IIFA event is the PETA grand entrance into all things Bollywood. Anuradha Sawhney said at a press release, “The science is conclusive: you can’t go green without also going vegetarian. Kicking the meat habit is the best thing that anyone can do for animals, their health, and the earth!” We will see if the IIFA agrees.

Let us know what you think of PETA’s presence in the entertainment media? Do you support their “no meat” policy at the IIFA “go green” event?
