As we all know, the children of "Slumdog Millionaire," Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed have had a rough go of it since standing on the stage of the Academy Awards this past February. Their houses have been reduced to rubble and they've also suffered their own family crises. Well, help has finally arrived! It came in the form in "Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle. Like most of us, he too was shocked and dismayed when he heard the news of the kids losing their homes, so he flew out to Mumbai immediately to see what he can do. He wasted no time and made sure the kids would now be leaving their bulldozed living areas and living in more modest housing. How great is that!
Danny Boyle had set up a trust fund for the children via his film production company that they could access when they were 18. That is still in place but many wondered what was being done for the children right now in their time of need. Azharuddin Mohammed is slated to move into his home in the next week while Rubina Ali's new home should be ready for her and her family to inhabit within the next 10 days. The houses are reportedly worth £33,000, so believe that this isn't just a move from slum to slum.
To nobody's surprise, Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed are ecstatic, especially Azharuddin who calls Danny Boyle, "uncle." "It is so great to see him again and I just hope he helps us get that house," he said. "I also want him to take me away and put me in another film."
Azharuddin Mohammed might work with Danny Boyle sooner than he thinks. Danny Boyle is still looking to complete more projects in Mumbai. This looks to be a lifelong friendship here!
There had been apartments offered to the children before, but Rubina Ali's family did not want to stray away from the slums of Mumbai that they grew up in. The flats that Danny Boyle purchased for the two kids will not be too far from the slums, so the kids can grow up with the same friends and live a similar life. Now, they'll just have a more stable house to go back to instead of the streets. Producer Christian Colson, who was also present with Boyle, said something needed to be done for Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed.
"We have to follow our own hearts and consciences and let our actions speak," Colson said. "We have to always remember that the most important thing is the welfare of the children."
I think it's a wonderful thing that someone has the best interests of the children in mind. Everyone called from someone to come through and help out these children and Danny Boyle, who has always looked out for them, saves the day once again. There should be more people in the world like Danny Boyle willing to lend out a helping hand. I guess we can finally put those nasty rumors to rest that Boyle was exploiting these children or wasn't looking out for them. With these new homes, hopefully there will be even better days ahead for Rubina Ali, Azharuddin Mohammed, and their families.
Who else is happy that the "Slumdog Kids" are finally moving into some nicer homes? How long overdue do you think this was? Let us know what you think below.
