If you saw the 2009 MTV Movie Awards last night, you'll know that in a night filled with laughs, awkward moments and "Twilight" taking home award after award, there were also the performances. The highlight performance of the night came from rap star Eminem. Unlike past performances on MTV which have seen Eminem reenact his videos on stage to flying around the arena dressed as a Superman clone, this time he was a bit more subdued when it was time for him to perform his hit song, "We Made You." It was him and his hype man performing the song and even performing a bit of his #1 song "Crack A Bottle." Just when you think everything would go without a hitch for Eminem for the rest of the night, things would drastically change.
Sacha Baron Cohen, whom most of you know from the 2006 smash movie "Borat," flew down from the top of the arena dressed as a winged angel wearing a jock strap. The wires didn't work well and he landed right on Eminem, his head in Em's lap and his bare butt mere inches away from Eminem's face. Needless to say, Eminem was not happy, yelling to have Sacha Baron Cohen removed off of him. Once security got things under control, Eminem and his crew stormed out of their seats and left. According to MTV, he did not come back. It's so weird to see Eminem of all people.
Some sites are questioning whether the stunt was staged as kind of a promotion for Sacha Baron Cohen's new movie "Brüno" coming this July. While I think Cohen was supposed to fall in Eminem's direction, I'm not sure he was in on the joke. Maybe Sacha Baron Cohen was supposed to fall on Eminem, but just not in the way that it was supposed to happen. It's not like Eminem needed the publicity. His album "Relapse" is the number one album in the country. Either way, it looks like we won't know for sure what was really behind that comedic stunt.
