'Slumdog Millionaire' Shut Out at 2009 MTV Movie Awards

Jai-NO! "Slumdog Millionaire" has been expected to take home several awards in the major award shows this year. They won at the Golden Globes, won at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and even took home eight Oscars. They were nominated for six awards at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards which took place in Los Angeles last night, tied for the lead with horror movie "Twilight." "Twilight" was the big winner of the night, taking home five out of six awards including Best Film; "Slumdog Millionaire" walked away with nothing, zero, zilch!
Before you guys scream bloody murder about the injustice that was caused by "Slumdog Millionaire" going 0 for 0 the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, at least I can tell you that you should have seen this coming. Just like I predicted, "Twilight" was and should have been the favorite to win the most golden popcorn trophies. As it showed last night in the results, it really wasn't a fair fight. From the reaction of the crowd to the hype surrounding the film and the sequel to it coming soon, it was clearly going to be their night. For the record, Dev Patel and Freida Pinto were not present at the award show last night.
The MTV Movie Awards love to be different and cater towards the younger generation. "Twilight" did that in more ways than one. "Slumdog Millionaire?" Not so much. "Twilight" was the trendy pick and usually when a trend is in style, you just have to sit back and either join the trend or wait for the trend to die down. Perhaps last night showed that the trend for other award shows (giving awards to "Slumdog Millionaire") died down and gave way to "Twilight" getting the accolades. I hate to say it, but I told you so!
The one award "Twilight" couldn't take home to complete the sweep was Best Song from a Movie. Miley Cyrus won for "The Climb," the popular song from the hit movie "Hannah Montana: The Movie." That song beat out "Jai Ho" the song that won an Oscar for Best Original Song. A.R. Rahman can't get any love from the MTV crowd it seems, at least not enough to put him over the juggernaut known as "Twilight."
As for the rest of the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, it was OK. It had its funny moments and it had its awkward moments. You saw some good performances such as the Eminem one and then parts of the show that just seemed to be filler for a two hour telecast. Comedian Andy Samberg did a good job hosting the event, but if "Twilight" was not a movie you liked, then last night was a drag. Was it a drag to you? Let us know what you thought about "Slumdog Millionaire" walking away with an unfamiliar feeling: empty-handed.
