Michael Jackson Remembered at the BET Awards

From the performances to the outfits, the memory of pop icon, Michael Jackson was apparent at The Black Entertainment Television Awards that took place last Sunday (6/28).

The awards opened up with a nostalgic clip of Jackson's own BET Awards performance with "The God of Soul," James Brown a mere 6 years ago. The fact that both influential figures have now passed away sent a chilling feeling into the hearts of the viewers.

The performances kicked off with an act by, R&B group popular in the 80s, New Edition. The group performed a medley of Jackson 5 songs including, "I Want You Back" and "ABC." The performance blew the audience away with its excellent choreography, considering the limited amount of time they must have had for preparations.

The host of the show, Jamie Foxx, actor and singer, then came onto stage dressed like the King of Pop clad with a signature single bejeweled glove and red leather jacket and danced to Jackson's, "Beat It." Foxx then stated, "Why is everyone sad? Let's make this a party. Let's celebrate the life of Michael. Let's bring it down!"

Performances also included Beyonce's very own, "Ave Maria/Angel" and Ciara's rendition of Jackson's "Heal the World." Throughout the show, stars were seen in clothing commemorating the pop icon and even acknowledged him in their thank you speeches.

The show closed with Janet Jackson's first public appearance since her brother's death. A striking similarity between her and her late brother was noticed and gave the viewer goosebumps. She spoke on behalf of the family and thanked everyone for their support and love since the tragedy.

Janet's words were followed by a heart filled performance by R&B superstar, Ne-Yo and Jamie Foxx. The two harmonized the Jackson 5's, "I'll Be There," as the audience teared up. The memory of Jackson doesn't stop there. Networks such as, MTV and NBC, plan on airing tributes in the week to come.

Check video clips from the awards below. How do you feel about the tragedy? What do you think about the performances at the BET Awards 2009?
